Abstract
Moxalactam (MX) and fosfomycin (FM) were tested as to their growth inhibitory effect on 15 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa using MS-2 research system(MS-2).
Routine antibiotic susceptibility test revealed that all of the test organisms except one were resistant to tetracycline, kanamycin and ampicillin while being susceptible to colistin except one strain.
Minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of MX and FM against all of the test strains were measured by both the conventional agar dilution and the recently introduced MS-2 methods. MICs thus obtained did not, however, reveal any significant differences between the two methods.
Bacterial growth inhibiting effects of MX and FM combination, which were investigated using MS-2, revealed that 10 strains out of 15 (66.7 %) were synergistically affected, while additive and indifferent effects were observed in 3 (20%) and 2 (13.3 %) strains, respectively. Antagonism was not observed throughout the test.
It is suggested that MS-2, which shows direct visible bacterial growth curves and through which more rapid results can be obtained than routine checkerboard and isobologram procedures, may be used as an exceedingly convenient method in measuring the combined effect of antibiotics, and at the same time MX and FM may be recommended as an antibiotic combination for the treatment of pseudomonas infections.
